Mann assembles a first-class supporting cast around his two leads, including Val Kilmer, Natalie Portman and Jon Voight, and much of the film's strength lies in the way he explores the lives of the most seemingly insignificant supporting player. The two leads contrast each other brilliantly - De Niro icy and introspective, Pacino intense and explosive. They only share the screen twice, and their first encounter in a diner is a moment to savour
