      A look at capital punishment through the eyes of young people whose lives have been shaped by it, including interviews with victims, those on death row and their families. Each episode focuses on a key aspect of the system - execution, trial and appeal - beginning with the stories of two of the youngest men facing death in Texas, who are due to be executed. Both have been found guilty of murder, and while the mother of one fights to use the final 72 hours to halt her son's execution for killing a police officer, a woman who was kidnapped by the other reflects on her ordeal and battles with her conflicting desires to forgive him

      Following a vote by viewers of The One Show, Simon Weston was chosen to have his portrait painted for inclusion in the illustrious National Portrait Gallery in London. Beating off competition from other national treasures including Michael Palin, Barbara Windsor and Lulu, the Falklands veteran now has to sit for the best part of three months while fine artist Nicky Philipps, who won acclaim for her painting of Princes William and Harry, captures his image on canvas. Fiona Bruce follows the artist and subject as they get to know each other, and re-tells Simon's story, from his injuries in 1982 and consequent battle for survival to his struggle with depression and how he has become a role model to others. Eventually the painting is completed but things aren't quite so straightforward. The gallery's trustees need to approve the portrait if it is to be included in their collection
