Documentary first shown in 2008, commemorating 90 years since the end of World War One, first shown in 2008. Featuring letters, diaries and poems about life in the trenches, read by Michael Portillo, Rageh Omaar, Ian Hislop and Andrew Motion. Archive images of the war and present-day footage of the landscape of France and Belgium are interwoven as the story unfolds of the optimism felt in 1914, through the horrors of the Somme to Europe's armistice in 1918
