Part one of two. Half-sisters Marian and Laura Fairlie resolve to find out more about the mysterious woman wandering the grounds of their eccentric uncle's Cumberland house. When Laura is married, the pair move to remote Blackwater Park, where crime, passion, secrets and a sinister nobleman blight their lives.
