Television chef Rick Stein traces his family's roots, especially those of his father, who suffered from manic depression and committed suicide in the 1960s. He finds out about the racial discrimination his father encountered during the First World War and the electric shock therapy he received. Rick also learns of his mother's brief first marriage to a man she met while studying at Cambridge University, before travelling to China to retrace the footsteps of his great-grandfather
