Explorer Benedict Allen recreates the stories of travel writers Eric Newby, Laurie Lee and Patrick Leigh Fermor. He combines archive footage with location filming and dramatisations to highlight the epic journeys these men undertook. The series begins with the tale of Newby's ascent of Mir Samir in Afghanistan, which was immortalised in his book A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush. Part of the Journeys of Discovery season
