  Mercenary opportunist Harry Mudd programs an android to take control of the Enterprise and sends it to an uncharted planet. Once there, he attempts to make Kirk and his crew an offer they can't refuse - but, since it's the irrepressible Harry making the proposition, they have no hesitation in turning it down

  A planet becomes engulfed by an outbreak of neural parasites, which claiming Spock as a victim and take the life of Kirk's brother. Reeling from the double blow, the captain realises that to stop the chaos, the destruction of a civilisation and his first officer is a near certainty

• Season 1 Episode 29: The City on the Edge of Forever

  Dr McCoy travels back in time through a vortex and changes history, stranding the Enterprise crew on a distant planet. Kirk's only hope of rectifying the situation is to follow the doctor and retrieve him before he can do any harm - but in the process he is forced to make a personal sacrifice. • Season 1 Episode 28: The Alternative Factor

  A magnetic force field causes a distortion in space so powerful it threatens the entire universe, and it falls to the crew of the USS Enterprise to save the day. William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy star

  Kirk beams down to a planet where computers are fighting a bloodless war. On the surface, he meets aliens who tell him the Enterprise has been marked for destruction, and begins a race to stop them making their intentions reality

• Season 1 Episode 23: Space Seed

  The Enterprise crew encounters derelict spacecraft the SS Botany Bay, which proves to be carrying deep-frozen war criminals from 20th-century Earth. William Shatner stars, with the late Ricardo Montalban as the villainous Khan, a role he reprised in the second Star Trek film

• Season 1 Episode 22: Return of the Archons

  Kirk investigates the disappearance of a long-lost starship and encounters a megalomaniac computer imposing control over an entire planet's brainwashed population. William Shatner stars

• Season 1 Episode 21: Court Martial

  Kirk faces court martial, charged with causing the death of a crewman by jettisoning a dangerous pod without giving him time to get clear.
