Sarah Lancashire stars as miner's wife Gertrude Morel, trapped in a loveless, violent marriage, who focuses her hopes and dreams on her sons. With William finding his feet in London and young Paul trying to assert his independence and form relationships with women of his own age, her possessive attitude leads to tensions : with tragic repercussions.
