Later in the real world, Marlow is surprised to see the same two men on the ward - who then take flight in exactly the same manner. Nicola and Mark continue their plan to defraud the writer, and another round of word association with Dr Gibbon dredges up further childhood memories, including a violent confrontation with his mother

Nicola tells Philip a film company wants to adapt his book but he remains suspicious, wondering why they would go to her rather than approach him directly.
