Part one of two. Tough Superintendent Jane Tennison is transferred to the Manchester police force, where her uncompromising methods soon create a stir among her more conventionally minded colleagues. Called on to investigate the murder of a local drug dealer, she is unconvinced by an all-too-convenient confession from a 14-year-old possible suspect and decides to pursue her own line of inquiry - homing in on the victim's former boss, a drugs kingpin known only as 'The Street'.
