One Way to Necropolis
TV Special
Alan Dein travels along the railway line that leads from Waterloo to what was, in Victorian times, the world's largest graveyard. In the 1800s, burial ground was hard to come by in London and public health was in jeopardy, so the 2,000-acre Brookwood Cemetery was built in Surrey, with special trains laid on to transport coffins and mourners. With contributions from artist Jane Wildgoose and historians Harry Willis Fleming and John Clarke
