Several of the immigrants make emotional journeys to their home countries, as Naima bids farewell to her mother to return to the West Bank and Ricardo visits his grandmother in the Dominican Republic, spending his baseball earnings to give her a new kitchen and bathroom. Barine also returns to the newly democratic Nigeria, to attend the re-burial of her brother Ken Saro-Wiwa. A new subject for the series is introduced in the form of Pedro Flores, a Mexican working in the meat-packing plants of Kansas. Although he earns more than he could at home, he misses his family and is hoping to raise enough money to move his relatives to the US
