Barnaby and Jones are on a team-building exercise and hating every minute of it, so a fatal explosion at a haulage yard in Calham Cross proves a welcome, if unfortunate, distraction. The yard is owned by Territorial Army commanding officer Matt Parkes, with a platoon made up of local men and whose son, James, is a businessman whose ruthlessness in the boardroom is matched only by his behaviour with women. To complicate matters, the village is also home to a peace protester and a grieving mother - and Barnaby has to decide if any of these locals is capable of arson and murder.
