Barnaby's secret past as a spy is revealed when a former agent is killed after a cricket match between the villagers and toffs. The dead man's wounds appear to have been inflicted by a giant claw, triggering rumours of a 'beast of Midsomer', and before long, another body turns up with similar injuries. Barnaby then realises the incidents are linked to the time the local network of spies spent in Cold War Berlin.
