    The story of Australian Chris Parnell, who spent 11 years in an Indonesian prison after being wrongly convicted of smuggling hashish in 1985. Determined to get out and prove his innocence, he made several failed escape attempts, but was freed in 1996 after a long campaign by family and friends

He was sentenced to three and a half years, and had to endure the atrocious conditions of two Korean prisons, including a cell so small he could not extend his arms above his head and a toilet that did not flush

  • Season 3 Episode 7: Ecuador

    The story of Daniel Van De Zandrewe, a student who moved to Miami after the death of his father in 1995, embarking on a hedonistic lifestyle in the city. To free himself from mounting debt, Daniel began smuggling drugs, but was convicted of drug trafficking after his second assignment, spending three years in the squalid conditions of an Ecuadorian jail

  • Season 3 Episode 6: Taiwan

    The story of South African military attache Colonel McGill Alexander who was taken hostage with his wife and three children in 1997 by Chen Chin-hsing, one of Taiwan's most notorious criminals. Chen's demands included the release of an accomplice and safe passage out of the country. Following a gun battle with police, McGill and his daughter were freed and further negotiations took place over several days, eventually leading to the release of the remaining hostages.     The story of Sarah Jackson from Milton Keynes, who agreed to become a drugs courier to pay off a £3,000 debt. Jackson, along with a friend she had duped into helping her smuggle cocaine from Peru to the UK, was seized by police at Lima airport and the pair were sent to different jails to await trial - one an easy-going women's prison, the other an overcrowded all-male prison

  • Season 3 Episode 4: Pakistan

    The story of British reporter Amardeep Bassey, who arrived in Pakistan in 2002 on a professional and personal journey to tell the stories of Afghan people in the wake of the US-led attack on the Taliban. However, his trip turned into a nightmare when passport control discovered he did not have a valid visa and declared him to be an Indian spy. The journalist was given a 15-year prison sentence, but was released after 28 days

  • Season 3 Episode 3: Bangladesh

    The story of Lia McCord from Texas, who travelled to Bangladesh in 1992 as a promising 18-year-old student with dreams of attending business school. She was offered $20,000 to deliver a consignment of heroin and, despite her attempts to pull out at the last minute, she was forced to carry the drug. She was caught and sentenced to life in prison, but the intervention of congressman Bill Richardson saw her released after four years

  • Season 3 Episode 2: Peru/Lima

    The story of Russell Thoresen, who moved from Tennessee to the Florida Keys when he was 20 years old and fell in love with a cocaine addict who asked him to smuggle the drug from the Peruvian capital Lima to Miami. Although he initially refused, gang members threatened to kill him if he did not transport the drug, and he ended up being caught and sent to the South American country's notorious Callao prison

  • Season 3 Episode 1: Kuwait

    The story of Scott White, whose party lifestyle as a young man in Kuwait during the late 1980s saw him using his wealthy father's money to illegally brew alcohol and purchase hashish. He was eventually arrested for drug dealing and sentenced to half a decade in prison, but he was able to escape amid the confusion caused when Saddam Hussein invaded the country two years after his incarceration

  • Season 2 Episode 4: Colombia

    A US martial-arts teacher recounts his experience of being kidnapped by rebels in Colombia while journeying through South America on his motorcycle, and the desperate measures he attempted to escape his captors - including refusing food and medicine. Last in series

  • Season 2 Episode 3: Nepal

    Profiling a Briton and his three accomplices who were persuaded to smuggle gold from Hong Kong to Nepal by gangsters. The travellers were caught by the authorities at Kathmandu airport and sentenced to four years in prison. Their hopes of release rested on the King of Nepal's birthday, when he is known to pardon certain prisoners

  • Season 2 Episode 2: Peru

    Profiling two young women from Los Angeles who agreed to smuggle cocaine, in return for an all-expenses paid holiday. However, they were caught at the airport and sentenced to 10 years in Peru's Chorrillos Prison

  • Season 2 Episode 1: Venezuela

    New drama-documentary series. Jim and Paul, two teenagers from Leicester, agree to smuggle drugs from Venezuela thinking it would lead to a life of riches and glamour. Their dream turns to a nightmare when they are arrested at the airport and imprisoned in one of the country's most notorious prisons

    The cautionary tale of freelance yachtsman Donald MacNeil who flew out to the Mediterranean under the belief that he was being hired by acquaintances to teach them to sail a boat back to England. Instead he was drawn into a cocaine-smuggling operation which ended in almost seven years spent in a Venezuelan prison. Last in series

  • Season 1 Episode 3: Sydney

    The story of traveller Mark, who got caught up in drug trafficking when he tried to put his life back on track. Agreeing to smuggle a kilo of cocaine from San Francisco to Australia in exchange for $100,000, he was caught during the attempt - little realising the narcotics he had swallowed to transport were slowly killing him

  • Season 1 Episode 2: Thailand

    The story of Sandra Gregory, who had to give up her job teaching English as a foreign language in Thailand due to ill health. As a way of prolonging her stay, she attempted to smuggle 90 grams of heroin into Japan in exchange for £1,000 - but was arrested at Bangkok airport and sentenced to life in the city's notoriously tough Lard Yao prison

  • Season 1 Episode 1: Mexico

    Documenting the stories of Britons who have been incarcerated abroad. In the first programme, a couple explain how, eager to make enough money to see them through the Ibiza winter, they ended up getting involved in smuggling marijuana from Costa Rica to Amsterdam - before being imprisoned in Mexico

    The story of Callie and Monique Strydom, a South African couple who were taken hostage by Islamic extremists while on holiday in Malaysia in April 2000. The pair, along with 19 other hostages, were sent to Jojo Island in the Philippines, where they were held for four months, until Colonel Gaddafi agreed to pay the gang out, and after a total of 127 days in captivity, Callie and Monique arrived back in South Africa to a hero's welcome.     A couple, Martin and Gracia, on an anniversary trip in the Philippines is taken hostage, along with 18 others, by an Islamic extremist group.
