The athletes journey to Kamchatka, a Russian peninsula on the north-east edge of Asia, to compete with Koriyak nomads in a long-distance running race through snow and ice. To train, they work as reindeer herders, learning how to cope in the freezing conditions and trying to avoid frostbite. They also get to taste a local delicacy - raw reindeer testicles

Two rival villages face one another in an archery tournament in Bhutan and the athletes find dealing with their 50-year grudge a mental as well as physical challenge. Using bamboo bows, they must fire razor-sharp arrows more than twice the Olympic distance to hit a target the size of a dinner plate. The athletes travel to Brazil where they must prepare themselves for the competition with a painful initiation ceremony. Their challenge is to race the Wauja tribe 16km along the swollen Batavi River in dug-out canoes. The sun is beating down, the boats are hard to balance and thousands of hungry piranhas wait beneath the surface of the water, but the competitors are determined to succeed
