The barrister reluctantly agrees to act on behalf of a recently released jailbird accused of kidnapping his infant son, and gets caught up in a bitter tug-of-love battle. Returning home in search of solace, he clashes with daughter Kate over her growing independence - and finds himself forced to accept she is now a woman. John Thaw stars in the legal drama, with guest appearances by Phyllis Logan, George Costigan, Holly Aird and Toyah Willcox
