    Part one of two. An opera singer is shot by a sniper at an Oxford University ceremony, just as she is about to receive an honorary degree. Morse is a big fan of her work and thinks she couldn't possibly be involved in anything untoward, but she soon manages to strike the wrong chord with him as his investigations turn up more than a few sordid secrets. Only the madman's psychiatrist seems able to provide a lead as to his whereabouts and her life is in mortal danger as a result.     A former bookie falls under suspicion for the murder of a hospital benefactor, who is found dead in his car.     The Oxford detective gains a taste of prison life while investigating the murder of an inmate jailed for a property swindle. Morse is determined to find out whether they know anything about the killing, but has to avoid offending the prison authorities while also dealing with a brash subordinate.
