Historian Michael Wood traces the life of the playwright, beginning with his birth and early family life in Stratford-upon-Avon. The eldest son of a Catholic glover, William had to leave school at 14 instead of continuing his education and going to university. While still a teenager he got local farmer's daughter Ann Hathaway pregnant, and his subsequent shotgun wedding at the age of 18 left him a married man with few prospects
