Michael Wood investigates the truth behind the legend of Shangri-La, an imaginary earthly paradise in the Himalayas free from war and suffering. His quest takes him through Nepal and Tibet, where he traces the story's roots to an ancient Indian myth. He visits the sacred Mount Kailash and concludes his journey in the ruins of the lost city of Tsaparang, which he believes may be the model for the story
