Part one of two. Newly promoted Captain Horatio Hornblower sets out to make his mark on the world, and soon manages to capture his first enemy vessel - only to discover a peace treaty has been signed, leaving him down and out, with barely a penny to his name. Fate seems to smile on the ambitious seafarer though, and he gets the chance to prove himself when he and his crew are asked to rendezvous with a merchant ship - a mission which quickly proves the villainous Bonaparte has reneged on the peace treaty.
