David Soul returns as American surgeon Alan Fletcher, whose first attempt to stand in for Meyer proved disastrous. This time he's here with his dying wife, whose only hope of survival is an experimental surgical procedure. Meanwhile, Ric is furious to receive a firm dressing-down from his boss, so he abandons his principles and seeks employment at the local private hospital, and Owen puts his foot in it when he expresses concern for Chrissie
