Gary Lineker introduces live coverage of the opening day's play in the third Major of the year, staged at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport. This is the ninth time the course has hosted the prestigious event and the omens don't bode well for the British and European contingent, with the only golfers to win The Open here hailing from Australia and the USA. Padraig Harrington ended the European drought in Majors that stretched back to 1999 by winning at Carnoustie last year on one of the most dramatic final days in recent memory. The Irishman started the final day six shots adrift of Spain's Sergio Garcia, but an afternoon full of twists and turns ended with the duo finishing level on seven-under par, before Harrington went on to win the four-hole play-off.
