When Irene hears about Bosinney's death she runs away, unable to face another day with Soames, preferring a life of genteel poverty to the sterile comforts of a loveless marriage. Old Jolyon manages to reunite his divided family, allowing Young Jolyon and June to move into the house at Robin Hill, and as the years pass, he has one last surprise for his grasping brood that will leave them incensed.
