• Season 2 Episode 6: EPISODE: 6

  Young Jolyon is cited as Irene's lover in his cousin's divorce petition, but the couple find true happiness at last with the birth of their son. Soames, however, almost loses his new wife Annette in childbirth, having told the doctor to save the baby rather than the mother. Although at first he is appalled to learn he has a daughter, rather than the longed-for son he anticipated, he eventually realises he finally has someone to give him unconditional love.   As the century draws to a close Montague Dartie's caddish ways - and his creditors - catch up with him, forcing Winifred to suffer the shame of humiliating divorce proceedings. Soames also contemplates divorce, pursuing Irene to demand his freedom so he can marry Annette Lamotte and finally produce an heir for his millions, but his heavy-handed approach sends her fleeing to France, where she meets and falls for Young Jolyon with all the pent-up passion of 12 celibate years

  Fleur finally convinces Soames of the value of her relationship with Jon, and persuades him to visit Irene to share his change of heart : but in a sudden rage he lashes out at his former lover and is attacked by her doting son, throwing the young couple's chances of tying the knot into turmoil once again. Standing firmly by his mother, Jon refuses to see Fleur, who confines herself to her room for days : until a face from the past reappears and finally makes her realise that their paths lie together. Meanwhile, Soames confronts Annette about her affair with Profond, who promptly turns up to tell the cuckolded husband that he is leaving in the hope of averting further scandal, but his reappearance at a cricket match looks set to cause irreparable damage to the already jeopardised marriage.   The drama continues as young lovers Jon and Fleur return home. In an effort to keep them apart, Soames organises a garden party for his daughter, while Jolyon decides a holiday would take his son's mind off matters of the heart, and sends him off to Paris. However, the separation doesn't have the hoped-for effect and succeeds only in strengthening the bond between the pair, who yearn to be reunited. Meanwhile, Annette seeks solace in the arms of Profond - much to cheated husband Soames' disgust - and Fleur finally discovers her father's shocking secret after finding a photograph of Irene hidden behind one of his wife.   New series of the acclaimed drama, continuing with this four-part adaptation of John Galsworthy's third novel, To Let. The saga begins in 1909 as Soames struggles to come to terms with the relationship between Irene and his love rival Young Jolyon, a matter made worse when he meets their son Jon, who soon befriends his own daughter, Fleur. Eleven years on, the now grown-up children meet at a modern art exhibition, and Soames is shocked to see them together. Jolyon arrives on the scene and warns his enemy to keep Fleur away from Jon, but the pair realise they have a common objective and resolve to work together to keep them apart : little knowing they've fallen in love.   Gossip spreads throughout London as Irene and her lover fail to contain their passion, prompting Old Jolyon to take drastic steps. A humiliated Soames vows to render his rival penniless by dragging him through the courts on trumped-up charges and gives further vent to his jealous rage by raping his wife. Bosinney sets out to avenge her, but instead meets with a tragic accident, leaving Irene alone and distraught - and with no option but to return to her cold-hearted husband.
