Prime Minister Francis Urquhart begins to neglect official duties as dreams of his murderous rise to power return to haunt him. Like a latter-day Lady Macbeth, loyal wife Elizabeth works to ensure he takes his rightful place in history, but foreign secretary Tom Makepeace resigns and prepares to challenge him for the leadership. While negotiating a historic treaty between the Greek and Turkish inhabitants of Cyprus, the Urquharts learn that there are massive oil deposits along a disputed sea boundary, and see a way of making a fortune : but the past is rapidly catching up with them.
