Thomas Pakenham, the eighth Lord Longford, is followed as he goes on the trail of his ancestors' secrets. Thomas and his daughter have uncovered records belonging to the holder of the title 200 years ago, and have found evidence that several payments were made to illegitimate children. One beneficiary in particular - the mysterious Catherine Weekes - fascinates them both, and they endeavour to piece together the details of her life, while musing on aristocratic attitudes to sex and marriage
