Waldemar Januszcak reveals the background of Edouard Manet's Le Dejeuner sur l'herbe, a pastiche of the Old Masters. The saucy pastoral scene caused outrage at its unveiling in 1863 with its depiction of two fully clothed men lounging alongside a naked girl. The influence of the artist's father and his desire for the female form are put forward as possible reasons behind Manet's revolutionary approach in the work, which was to provide inspiration for the impressionist art movement
