A sweat-drenched Carter finally arrive in the Congo as part of a voluntary medical programme during the civil war. He discovers primitive Third World facilities, a few heroic staff and a constant stream of patients overflowing the tiny hospital, while the fighting carries on apace, threatening to engulf them all.
