• The Sugdens

  The life and times of the soap's founding family the Sugdens, who started out in 1972 as a stable farming clan. Under the rule of matriarch Annie, they ran Emmerdale Farm and rarely faced a greater dilemma than a broken-down tractor - but have more recently gone through the drama of deaths, teenage pregnancy and numerous affairs. Actor Clive Hornby, who played Jack from 1980 until his death in July 2008, discusses his character's eventful life, which has seen him become a novelist, bury two wives and endure the trauma of being accidentally shot by his adopted son. Elizabeth Estensen (Diane), Sammy Winward (Katie) and Kelvin Fletcher (Andy) also talk about the highlights and pitfalls of life in the village

• The Tates

  Phillip Schofield narrates a retrospective look at the Tates, whose arrival in the village in 1989 brought a touch of glamour to the rural soap. During their time in the village, the family dealt with more than their fair share of dramas, from kidnapping, murder and suicide to affairs, paralysis and lesbianism.
