Peter Ackroyd presents the first instalment of a new documentary-drama series charting the life of the acclaimed author, using the latest technology to explore his Victorian surroundings and dramatic reconstructions of key events from his life. The opening episode charts his family's sudden impoverishment, examining how a humbling and humiliating start in life offered inspiration for his characters in straitened circumstances. Anton Lesser, Prunella Scales, Timothy West and Miriam Margolyes star in the dramatised interludes
