The story of Gary Powers, the American pilot who was at the centre of two turning points in the Cold War. In 1960, relations between the US and the Soviet Union were improving - Khrushchev had been invited to America and nuclear disarmament talks were gathering speed. However, the US's display of peaceful diplomacy was shattered when a U2 spy plane piloted by Powers was shot down attempting to photograph military installations in Russia. Two years later, a deal was made to trade the captive Powers for a Soviet spy apprehended in New York - but negotiations between the superpowers did not go as smoothly as planned
