Things are looking up for the frustrated writer as his stories and columns are at last printed in the newspapers : only for tragedy to strike when his beloved wife becomes seriously ill following a miscarriage. David enjoys an idyllic childhood until his widowed mother enters a violent marriage and dies shortly after giving birth to her second child. Ending all hopes of an education, his cruel stepfather sends him to work in a London factory, but the plucky lad runs away and begins the arduous journey to his aunt Betsey's in Dover - in the hope of finding a home at last.
