The story of Jean Francois Abgrall, a homicide detective who in 1989 - while still a fresh-faced inspector - was assigned to investigate the brutal murder of a woman in broad daylight on a beach in Brittany. Abgrall soon became convinced that an odd drifter named Francis Heaulmes was responsible, but his prime suspect had a water-tight alibi, and continued to taunt the detective with mysterious hints alluding to his guilt. Abgrall recounts how he chased Heaulmes through the underbelly of France in pursuit of the truth
