Part one of two. The chalk-and-cheese detective duo face their toughest case yet as they try to track down a serial killer with a penchant for words. At the scene of each crime, the culprit leaves behind a chilling document for the police, carefully written and lovingly illustrated, describing each murder in detail. The case begins at a short story contest, where one entry proves so graphic it prompts the police to revise their initial views of a recent fatal accident. So begins a desperate game of cat and mouse between a sinister foe and an increasingly concerned Dalziel and Pascoe, for whom the crimes are getting agonisingly close to home.
