Cooking in the Danger Zone: Season 5 (2009)

  • Season 4 Episode 5: Food as a Weapon

    Writer Stefan Gates concludes his culinary journey by being smuggled over the Thai border into Burma, where he goes on patrol with a Karen rebel group who are being hunted by the military government. After eating local dishes such as civet cat and an endangered loris, he secures passage to Venezuela, where food is being used in a political battle between the socialist president and the rich elite.     Writer Stefan Gates visits two emerging economic superpowers, China and India, to find out how their poorest people eat. After a stint working in the Kung Fu fast food joint he shakes off his Communist Party minders to talk to poverty-stricken farmers left behind in the rush toward modernisation. In India he joins members of the lowest caste, the Untouchables, for a meal and finds rat is on the menu

    Writer Stefan Gates discovers how people feed themselves in war-torn areas. He visits a camp in Uganda where almost two million refugees have to survive on UN rations. Travelling on to Afghanistan, Stefan finds the people struggling to subsist in a conflict that never seems to end. Here he samples the testicles of the fat-tailed sheep and dines with a former Taliban commander

  • Season 4 Episode 2: Food That Kills

    Writer Stefan Gates visits two places where people are eating food that could kill them. He begins in Chernobyl's exclusion zone, meeting an old woman who prepares a potentially radioactive meal for him from produce grown on the contaminated land. The beautiful Pacific island of Tonga is his next stop, where he discovers the natives have grown so fat their lives are now at risk

  • Season 3 Episode 3: God's Food: Israel and the Occupied West Bank

    Food critic Stefan Gates journeys to Israel and the West Bank, where he discovers that the age-old conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians is rooted in territorial disputes, but expressed in food - or rather a lack of it. Visiting both Jewish and Arab residents, he tastes tear gas, hummus, kosher food and camel's milk

  • Season 3 Episode 2: Eating with America's Neighbours: Haiti and Mexico

    Food critic Stefan Gates' culinary exploration takes him to Haiti, where he stays in the violent slums of Cite Soleil. He samples mud cakes made of pure clay, helps with food hand-outs for impoverished citizens and engages in a moonshine-fuelled voodoo festival. Travelling to Mexico, he learns how imported US food has contributed to the collapse of native agriculture

    Writer Stefan Gates considers controversial food topics and looks at the culinary offerings of Burma, one of the world's most dangerous places. Last in series

  • Season 2 Episode 4: Venezuela

    Writer Stefan Gates visits Venezuela, which is currently in the midst of a socialist revolution lead by Hugo Chavez. He cooks in the slum's soup kitchens, investigates food shortages in subsidized shops and meets one of the richest men in the country who is battling to save his land

  • Season 2 Episode 3: India

    Food writer Stefan Gates visits India to spend some time with the Dalit or the untouchables - the lowest ranked social group in the country's caste system. They survive on a diet made up mostly of rice but he joins them for a meal of roasted rat, one of their few sources of protein

  • Season 2 Episode 2: Arctic

    Stefan Gates heads for the Arctic to learn about the diet of the Inuit as he continues his culinary adventure. The food writer participates in a seal hunt but it remains to be seen whether he can bring himself to kill and eat a baby seal, or taste the local delicacy of 18-month-old rotten walrus

    Stefan Gates visits China to see how modern food preparation is changing the way people eat. He spends a day working in a fast food outlet and samples an unusual restaurant's menu in Beijing. Stefan also tries to shake off his Communist party minders and interviews poor farmers. Last in the series

  • Season 1 Episode 4: Fiji & Tonga

    Writer Stefan Gates looks at the problem of obesity in the South Pacific. He heads to Tonga, where 91 per cent of people are overweight, to speak to the kickboxing princess determined to change that statistic, and goes to Fiji to try the local cava and a freshly slaughtered piglet

  • Season 1 Episode 3: Uganda

    Writer Stefan Gates visits a refugee camp in war-torn Uganda to learn how people survive on United Nations rations. The food provided gives just 60 per cent of daily needs, leaving the people to find the rest themselves - a tough task with rebels patrolling the nearby countryside

  • Season 1 Episode 2: South Korea

    Writer Stefan Gates asks whether there is anything wrong with eating dogs as he explores the culinary offerings of South Korea. He visits a farm where more than 2,000 canines are raised for their meat, picks up a few recipes from 'Dr Dogmeat', and hears allegations that the animals are sometimes tortured to death
