A crime writer blames her nephew for the death of her beloved niece who the police say died in a boating accident. The author concocts a plan to take revenge, first by changing her will in his favour and then luring him to her walk-in vault - bursting with jewels and cash - before locking him in and leaving him to die. She then puts her knowledge of the criminal mind to good use by covering her tracks, and although Columbo strongly suspects foul play, he finds clues are thin on the ground.
