Synopsis:
The annual St Peter's Fair gets under way in Shrewsbury but a gruesome murder dampens the festivities. Antagonism between local merchants and visiting traders becomes increasingly ugly, and as civil unrest rages in the streets, Beringar is ordered to kill his friend Cadfael, whose investigations are causing King Stephen acute political embarrassment.
