The stories of childhood friends Pam Dusu and Lola Adesiaye, who now live next door to each other in Robinson College. While Pam is determined to get a good degree so she can make a living practising law, Lola feels studying at Cambridge leaves her ostracised both by her fellow students, who look down on her because she is part of a special scheme, and her friends outside the college, who feel that by studying at Cambridge she is compromising her heritage
