Clemency Burton-Hill and Josie D'Arby present as the three finalists perform a concerto of their choice with the Northern Sinfonia at the Sage Gateshead. Composer Eric Whitacre and classical guitarist Milos Karadaglic provide analysis of the music, and there is a recital by pianist Lara Melda, who won the title in 2010

The winners of the keyboard, brass, strings, woodwind and percussion categories enter the semi-finals, where they perform to determine which three will reach the last stage of the contest, as judged by composer Tansy Davies, pianist Huw Watkins, Sinfonia Cymru conductor Gareth Jones and Marshall Marcus, director of the London Southbank Centre's Sistema Programme. Presenter Clemency Burton-Hill also goes behind the scenes at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama to provide profiles of the musicians who have made it through to this stage of the contest

Clemency Burton-Hill presents highlights of the percussion category final, from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. Richard Rayner, James Larter, Hyun-gi Lee, Molly Lopresti and Peter Rayner perform a mostly modern repertoire, featuring backing tracks, shouting and self-penned compositions, and all hope to convince the judges they deserve the last place available in the semi-final, where they will compete against the winners of the keyboard, brass, strings and woodwind contests.
