    Halfway through his journey, and after narrowly avoiding being caught up in a police operation targeting cocaine smugglers, the adventurer reaches the vast Mamiraua nature reserve, home to many of the region's most iconic species. There he lives among local tribe the Ribeirinho - 'river people' - and hunts the Amazon's biggest fish, the Pirarucu, which can grow to a length of 4.5metres

    The former Royal Marine revisits old friends when he meets members of the Matis tribe, but the reception is lukewarm due to their wariness of outsiders they hold responsible for the diseases that killed many of them. Bruce also meets the loggers who are blamed for cutting down great swathes of the forest. Farther along the river, the Marubos prove more lively with dancing and rituals through the night

He learns a new way of fishing during a stay with the Achuar people, who have only had contact with the outside world for 40 years, and tries one of the ritual drugs of the community.     The former Royal Marine journeys from the source of the mighty Amazon river high up on the Peruvian mountain Nevado Mismi, through the world's largest forest, to the port of Belem, where the tiny trickle that started as glacial melt water finally meets the Atlantic Ocean. He begins his journey by spending time with a family of llama farmers and meeting some of the key players in the cocaine trade
