Hollywood actress Marina Gregg and her film-director husband take up residence at Gossington Hall in the village of St Mary Mead. But a celebratory drinks reception to meet the couple's new neighbours turns to tragedy when an excitable fan fatally consumes a poisoned cocktail apparently meant for the new lady of the manor. As Miss Marple investigates, helped by a friend and a local inspector, Marina spits out a similarly spiked cup of coffee on the set of her new film - but dark secrets turned up by the amateur sleuth about the star's unhappy past begin to paint a different picture.
