Anna Maxwell Martin stars in the last of Jimmy McGovern's single dramas, which in a break from the usual format provides a link with last week's episode. She stars as happily married mother-of-three Tina, who works as an officer in a young offenders' institution. One cold morning she oversees the transfer of a new inmate but her sense that things are not quite right turns out to be an understatement when the boy commits suicide soon after and she has to face his distraught father. However, her problems have only just begun, and after a series of betrayals and cover-ups Tina becomes the victim of a terrible crime forcing her to take the law into her own hands - and leading her eventually into the dock herself. Peter Cartwright does his best to help his sons Stephen and Dom come to terms with the fast-approaching death of their mother, but while he appreciates the palliative care nurse's aid at this time, not everyone is as welcoming. Stephen suspects her motives and his misgivings intensify after the teenager's mum passes away, leading to a deterioration in his mental health. Fuelled by his anxiety over the welfare of Dom and troubled by the fact his father appears to have put his wife's demise behind him, he goes on to commit a serious offence. Hairdresser Mo Murray refuses to be intimidated by a local gang and, supported by her best friend Sue but against the advice of her own family, decides to disregard its leader's instruction to close her salon on the day of a member's funeral. Retribution follows when a youngster is shot and killed, and matters escalate until members of the Murray family find themselves in the dock.
