Richard Attenborough's rousing and substantial account of Winston Churchill's formative years. As viewers might expect, the film explores his boyhood and his time as a war correspondent in India, and culminates in his first election to Parliament. Simon Ward does a fine job in the lead role, ably supported by a top-drawer cast including Anthony Hopkins, Anne Bancroft, Robert Shaw, John Mills and Jack Hawkins
