Superb, inspired black comedy boasting a devoted fan base. It follows the misadventures of two unemployed, drug-addled and alcohol-sodden actors who flee their seedy London flat and embark on a disastrous holiday in the Lake District. Richard E Grant and Paul McGann star in the title roles, with Richard Griffiths as Withnail's outrageous Uncle Monty and Ralph Brown as Danny the dealer. Written and directed by Bruce Robinson
