Synopsis:

In 1940, a 10-year-old boy turns up in a small Georgia town after the abduction of his mother. For protection, he pretends to be deaf and mute, is taken in by a kindly man and makes a new life for himself doing odd jobs round the town. He soon gains the confidence of the residents, who think he can never reveal their secrets, and becomes aware of everyone's deepest desires. Charming comedy drama, with strong performances from Matthew Modine, James Earl Jones and Claire Bloom
