Cesare and Adriana, two aristocrats living in turn-of-the-century Sicily, fall in love, but she decides to grant his father's deathbed wish by marrying his brother instead. When she is widowed, Cesare returns to renew their affair, even when he learns she is dying - but her mother does not approve of the relationship.
