Cannes award-winning epic charting 40 years of political upheaval in China expressed through the lives and experiences of ordinary people. The action focuses on the life of a gambling addict, who is forced to join the Nationalist army, but eventually allowed to return home where he is hailed a hero. Directed by Zhang Yimou, and starring Ge You and Gong Li. The film is adapted from Yu Hua's acclaimed novel : although much of the intricate detail was necessarily expunged from the screenplay
