Movie (1944)
It's hard to believe this sizzling thriller features Lauren Bacall's movie debut, so assured is her performance. She plays a sultry pickpocket who becomes involved with charter-boat captain Humphrey Bogart during World War Two - but her need to leave the Vichy-controlled island of Martinique and get back to the States prompts him to embark on a risky operation with a group of French freedom fighters. Walter Brennan and Hoagy Carmichael are among the sterling supporting cast. This adaptation of a supposedly unfilmable novel by Ernest Hemingway is the first in a double-bill of films from legendary director Howard Hawks
