A group of eccentric and outspoken women living in Florence during the tense pre-war years of the 1930s experience the ups and downs of parenthood when they decide to adopt a local lad disowned by his father. However, as international hostilities break out, their happy existence comes under threat. Lush drama, bolstered by a host of colourful and well-sketched characters, perfectly played by Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Joan Plowright, Cher and Lily Tomlin
